Brief Bio

Dr. Cigdem Sengul is a Reader in Computer Science at Brunel University London. Her research spans usable privacy and security, Internet of Things, sustainable systems, and applications of AI in software engineering. She has extensive experience in academia and applied research, including senior researcher roles at Nominet and Telekom Innovation Labs. Cigdem is active in standardisation (IETF ACE WG) and co-authored the MQTT-TLS profile for IoT security.  She is also Chair of the ACM-W Global Communications Committee and is deeply committed to inclusive computing education, with a focus on equity, diversity, and belonging in teaching, research, and leadership. 

 

Ambitions for the London ACM-W Chapter

Dr. Sengul is excited about the London ACM-W Chapter’s mission to build confidence and community among professional women in computing. She hopes to contribute to initiatives that bridge academic and industry mentorship and amplify research-informed practices for inclusion. She is particularly keen to foster cross-institutional collaborations that empower women at all stages of their careers through initiatives like cross-sector panel discussions, technical skills workshops that bridge the academic-industry gap, and collaborative research showcases that highlight women’s contributions to emerging technologies.
