On 4 November, we again celebrated the brilliant Ada Lovelace with a full day of talks, hands-on activities, and creative challenges for students from Camden School for Girls and Alexandra Park School. Initiated by Professor Golnaz Badkobeh , Head of the Department of Computer Science at School of Science & Technology, the school students were motivated to think about an inclusive environment for all and explored their interests in Computer Science. The interactive sessions comprised of innovative technological topics including quantum computing, machine learning and NLP which allowed the students to build the foundation to explore these topics much further. Some highlights of the event were:
– A thought-provoking Quantum Computing talk by Dr. Olalla A. Castro-Alvaredo
– A fun quantum activity led by Dr. Marjahan Begum

Launch of London ACM-W Chapter

Our first online meeting marked the official launch of the London ACM-W Chapter on 22 September 2025. The team discussed how to define and communicate the chapter’s mission, aims, and objectives clearly. Plans were made to gather lived experiences ethically and systematically, supported by shared resources and research guidelines. Members will review existing ACM and IEEE materials to identify areas for improvement and strengthen our online presence with relevant references. Additionally, members are encouraged to join the Race for Life on 9 May 2026 in Regent’s Park to support a great cause together. Please contact us if you are also interested to join the cause.

Speed Networking

The event, led by Dina Mostafa and Marjahan Begum, was organised for School of Science and Technology at City St. George’s, University of London on 02 June 2025. The women staff from Computer Science and Mathematics department engaged in rapid idea exchanges, fostering connections and exploring potential research collaborations. The initiative provided a dynamic platform to spark interdisciplinary partnerships and strengthen academic networks.

– International Women’s Day 2025

On 6 March 2025, a full day session of interactive learning about computer science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) was held at City St. George’s, University of London to mark International Women’s Day. The event was attended by 40+ students Year 7 and Year 8 students from Camden High School and Parliament Hill School in London. It was aimed to encourage students, specifically girls, to consider careers in STEM, particularly computer science, AI and related field. Our primary aim was to demystify AI for a younger audience and to inspire the next generation of women scientists, engineers, and innovators. The event explored critical themes including “What does it mean to be a computer scientist?”, “Who chooses to work in this field?”, and “What does the rise of AI mean for our society?”

The event was organised by Marjahan Begum and Ferheen Ayaz. There were panel discussions by staff members including Michael Akintunde, Giacomo Tarroni, Mirela Reljan-Delaney, and PhD student Sandamali Ariyawansha Wickramasinghe. Ferheen Ayaz and Michael Akintunde later conducted interactive exercises on supervised learning and NLP. City St. George’s student volunteer Mariyahbanu Memon, Siley Malakbab, Paula Suarez Rodriguez and Aarja enthusiastically participated in the event and interacted with school girls to answer any questions they have considering computing as a career.
